Her practice explores the construction of biography and the ways personal and collective narratives are shaped, distorted, or erased. Working across film, installation, publishing, and curatorial projects, she examines the shifting boundaries of identity, digital legacies, and the politics of visibility. Often engaging with insider-outsider dynamics, her work reflects on transborder experiences and the negotiation of belonging within dominant cultural narratives. Phromchanya is a tutor at Willem de Kooning Academy and co-founder of NON NATIVE NATIVE, a platform that engages with Asian representation within the Dutch and European cultural landscape. Through research, exhibitions, and public interventions, NNN connects contemporary creative practices with local diaspora narratives, fostering new modes of exchange and visibility. It also organizes NON NATIVE NATIVE FAIR (NNNFAIR), an alternative cultural fair that subverts conventional frameworks of Asian trade fairs, reimagining them as spaces for discourse and cross-cultural exchange. This initiative fosters critical exchanges between Asian and European cultural narratives, emphasizing contemporary visual culture. Inspired by the format of teleshopping channels, the fair transforms the online space into a virtual fairground, allowing 46 participants to showcase their work as exchangeable goods—artworks, publications, and performances—encouraging dialogues around Asian diasporas in Europe. Collaborating with Berlin-based sōydivision and un.thai.tled, the fair creates a sense of solidarity and connection among artists and audiences during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fair facilitates direct transactions without commission fees and features live presentations, where creators share the stories behind their offerings. By providing promo codes for special incentives, the fair encourages audience engagement and supports creative solidarity during these unprecedented times. By subverting the notion of an “Asian cultural fair,” we invite participants to present their visions and projects that deepen dialogues around Asia. Through a blend of visual storytelling and sound, the work reflects on themes of memory, identity, and the passage of time, the paradox of being simultaneously present and overlooked, inviting contemplation on the nature of existence. Ten years before his passing, senior artist Chavalit Soemprungsuk began digitizing and sharing his lifetime collection on a social media platform. This extensive archive—comprising over ten thousand items, including scanned manuscripts, films, digital photographs, tagged locations, videos, live-streams, artworks, and personal commentaries—was made publicly accessible. While this act mirrors the behavior of ordinary social media users who document their lives online, Chavalit did so with the intent of preparing for his own death, believing that the digital collection would be for eternity. I Was Here the Whole Time is part of Belle Phromchanya’s ongoing investigation into how personal legacies are shaped through tracing, reflecting, and renarrating found digital materials. The video weaves together home footage from family trips in the 1990s, shot by her father, with Belle’s recordings of a senior Thai artist in Amsterdam, who was the same age as her father and became a subject of her work until his sudden passing due to COVID-19. By layering these early years' memories with the struggles of dealing with the uncertainty of daily life, the video shares attempts of capturing the temporality of the moment—and both the beauty and unsettling experience of being elsewhere. The work was presented at the Majhi International Art Residency Program’s 2020 edition during Berlin Art Week and exhibited at Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen and River City Bangkok. Lands with No Volcanoes is a collaboration between NON NATIVE NATIVE and Thai artists based in the Netherlands: Belle Phromchanya, Anon Chaisansook, and Sankrit Kulmanochawong. The audio-visual installation narrates through the re-appropriation of found digital materials, including nature documentaries, tourism advertisements, and local news footage, augmented by 3D-rendered imagery, highlighting the current socio-political tensions beneath the tranquil facade of the two regions. The work was produced in the context of the Majhi International Art Residency 2021 in Eindhoven. The film highlights the human side of the Tiger Project, focusing on the delicate balance between humans and wildlife in this unique ecosystem. Presented at the TIGER CITY exhibition during Bangkok Design Week 2020, the documentary complements the exhibition’s exploration of forest conservation and coexistence.
