This documentary explores the life and artistic journey of Chavalit Soemprungsuk, a Thai artist living in Amsterdam, who has navigated the complexities of cultural identity for over sixty years. Co-directed by Belle Phromchanya and Jakkarin Thepvong, the film delves into Soemprungsuk's personal dilemmas, including his dedication to art amidst societal constraints, the tension between solitude and fame, and the blurring lines between physical and digital realities.
Through a series of intimate conversations and interviews with fellow artists, curators, and collectors, the film invites viewers to reflect on the intersection of life and art, revealing the ongoing existential struggles of creative individuals across generations. It builds upon Phromchanya's earlier research on the themes of art, life, and death in the digital era, culminating in a poignant narrative that resonates with contemporary audiences.
The film premiered at the '80+ Festival' exhibition, celebrating Soemprungsuk's eightieth birthday, and has been showcased at various venues, including Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).
Supported by the National Film and Media Fund, Thailand Ministry of Culture.
